Okay our followers on this blog would know that two nights ago was a bit excessive and we paid a bit of a price this morning. Our bags had to be packed by 6:30 am and we faced another long day on the bus. 9 hours today and it took almost until 1:00 pm for Barb and I to start feeling shall we say, normal again!!
The internet here in Greece is slower than dial up which is why this entry is a day late. Downloading pictures takes forever.
We crossed the border from Bulgaria into Greece at 10:45 am. We are back in the Euro Zone. Our tour director put on a movie for us about tourists on a bus tour of Greece. It was the second time we have watched a movie on our trip, the first being The Sound of Music as we drove through the Alps in Austria.
So many of you may be thinking with these long hours on a bus maybe this isn't the trip for you but you must have been here for today's WOW moment. We are in Kalambaka, Greece, where you say? We drove through the mountains of northern Greece, and let me say that being in a 17 meter log bus on a two lane road with cliffs to fall off of was thrilling. We do love our driver, he is great.
Look at some of the views from our bus.
Then we arrived here in this little town, and we had a tour of Meteora, which are giant natural rock formations with monasteries on top which makes them look like they are in the sky. This was hard to describe. We drove up the roadways to visit inside one of the monasteries where 29 nuns live. We could not take any pictures inside the church but we took many from the courtyards.
This area is where the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only was filmed in 1981. The area was under the Ottoman rule in the 1500's, but many of these monasteries were bombed and destroyed in the 2nd World War. They were rebuilt and opened up to the public in the 1960's. Monks and Nuns still live their lives here in separate monasteries but have accepted having tourists visit in order to raise much needed money.
Yes, even I ventured up there. Many of you know of my fear of heights and believe me, this was very high, but my group and Barb encouraged me to see the views so I crossed some foot bridges over great gorges. I am okay with this as long as nobody is too close to me and I feel that I will only fall as far as my feet, therefore I didn't get too close to any edges.
This place is a must see and something that was well worth the 9 hours on the bus!
Wow, good for you, Dave!!! That takes some guts!! I know the feeling when I walked across some swinging bridge over a gorge in BC. Do enjoy Greece - and take more photos for later viewing!!!
