We had a walking tour this morning of the Schonbrunn Palace which was the home of the Hapsburg monarchy here in Vienna. The palace was giving to Maria Theresa by her father and she was the only female ruling monarch here in Austria. I only mention this because she had 16 children, and her youngest daughter was Marie Antoinette. We found this and other historical facts interesting,
The gardens at the back of this palace were nice to see. The building way in the background of this picture is where the Queen and her husband would have coffee or tea in the mornings. They would ride there rather than walk which would take about 20 minutes to get there on foot. Imagine that in your backyard.
After our tour of the palace we were taken along a ring road that surrounds Vienna to see more historical buildings from our coach. We then had the rest of the afternoon to explore on our own. Barb and I had a light lunch then found a coffee house for a local treat, iced coffee. This is espresso, with ice cream and whipped cream and it was really good!
After heading to the bank we decided that is was time to go back to the hotel and rest. We enjoyed our concert tonight, it was very entertaining, good music, singing and dancing and then we walked home through a part near our hotel. Of course we needed a picture beside the statue of Johann Strauss.
Tomorrow we leave the Euro Zone and head into Eastern Europe and Hungary. We are not sure what the WiFi here will be like so if we are unable to post for a few days don't worry, we will get back online when we can.
Wait a minute! And I quote..."So today we took it a bit easy, not eating much..." Then we see a picture of a GIANT espresso/ice cream/whipped cream concoction. What the heck????
ReplyDeleteCan you bring one of those GIANT espresso/ice cream/whipped cream concoctions home for me ? You said you rested - but it sounds like a lot of walking! how are the feet holding up? Can't wait to see the rest of the photos!
ReplyDeleteOk Dave, the day you start taking it easy on the booze is the day you have your first typo??? I'm not too sure what to think of that. Looks like Vienna needs to give Timmies a lesson on iced coffee!!!
ReplyDeleteI think all the history your learning about would be mt favourite part!
