Yesterday we left Kalambaka for our drive to Athens. Along the way we got a bit lost looking for a rest stop. Our driver Marcello is an amazing driver with his 17 meter bus but the narrow city streets in this little town really put him to the test.
We also stopped at Thermopylae where in 480 BC the Spartan King took 300 of his best men and 700 thespians to stand and fight the Persians. If you saw the movie 300, you might have a bit of an idea of this story but we have now seen the place where it occurred and the statue honouring King Leonidas I, who lost his life along with his men but this small force were able to hold off a much larger force of Persians (15k approx.) for three days until they were betrayed and the Persians were shown another passage way through these mountains where they outflanked the Spartans.
Next it was on to Delphi Greece, for a visit and climb to see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, in the time of 510 - 323 BC. It is something to walk through these ruins high in the mountains of Greece and see some of the columns and walls still standing.
Finally we headed for Athens and a traditional Greek dinner at a Taverna complete with music, dancers and oh yes lots to drink.
So the title says we are interrupting our vacation and our updates to this blog for the next 3 - 4 days. Part of the appeal to us for this trip was at the half way point we would be taking a 3 day cruise through the Greek Isles. That begins today, and we have been told that there is no internet access on the boat, so until we return to dry land in Greece and then take an overnight ferry across the Adriatic Sea back into Italy, we won't be able to post any updates.
Barb and I plan to sleep in and do very little for the next few days to prepare for our last week and a bit of our tour.
No pictures with this entry, it is taking over 40 minutes per picture here in Greece so we will update this post when we get back to Italy. So far we have taken over 2700 pictures!!!
Stay well everyone, we will be back soon!
What will we do without our daily updates?? OK, we won't bother checking the computer, instead we will concentrate on those TORONTO BLUE JAYS who are in FIRST PLACE!!! Have fun on the cruise, hope you can relax!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was hoping Bruce would update you on the Blue Jays - 11 wins in a row, full house at the skydome and Toronto's going nuts!!! All thanks to Dave Price - some great pitcher and some other new guy.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think you've beat the ball right out of the Skydome - 2700 pictures - WOW!!!! When you get back, you'll have to schedule a month's worth of 'slide' shows!
Sure hope you enjoy those Greek Isles - photos I've seen are lovely!!!
Enjoy your rest. You must be pretty cream crackered after all those early mornings and long dinners, The Greek islands are so beautiful I'm sure you will come back online completely refreshed. (Unless you encounter illegal migrants along the way. Do let us know if you did.) Keep up the great writing and pics. Thanks!
